About Post Office Tree
In 1501 a letter was left in a sailor's boot up a tree near the fountain by the navigator Pedro d'Ataida. The letter contained a warning that Calicut was no long safe. Adm Jao da Nova found this letter and diverted to Malakat. This letter saved him and his troops. Since then many letters were left in the shoe up the tree by commanders of passing ships. This tree is now very big and old and there is a post box, in the shape of a sailor's boot, where letters can be posted.
