Vaalkop Dam Nature Reserve
North West Province
Vaalkop Dam Nature Reserve is located about 100 kilometres North-West of Pretoria and is a prime location for fishing and bird watching. The reserve spans almost 4000 hectares, and contains an 800 hectare demarcated bird sanctuary in which over 340 different species have been reported, including the African Fish Eagle, Pygmy King Fisher, Cape Penduline Tit and the Blue-cheeked Bee-Eater. Visiting the sanctuary requires booking in advance.
The Vaalkop Dam covers a quarter of the reserve and is said to be one of the top angling destinations. Some species include carp and yellowfish. Boats are allowed on portions of the dam allowing visitors to reach the quieter fishing spots, including the island in the centre of the dam. Another portion of the dam has been set aside for water-sports.
A campsite is provided but fuel and supplies are not available at the reserve. These can be bought from the nearest town about 10km away. The reserve can be reached by car, although certain roads inside the reserve may require a 4x4 vehicle.
