Botsalano Game Reserve
North West Province
The Botsalano Game reserve is located in the North-West province about 50 km from Mafikeng and spanning just under 6000 hectares. The area is comprised of Kalahari thornveld climate and is usually dry with rainfalls in the summer. The reserve is primarily used as a breeding area for antelope and other mammals which are transported to game reserves in other parts of South Africa. As such, the reserve does not have any large predators, and night walks are encouraged.
Wildlife in the park include Cape Buffalo, White Rhino, Eland, Oryx and Springbuck. Over 200 other species of bird have been recorded in the reserve including many species of eagle and vulture, Secretary Birds and Kori Bustards.
The reserve is well populated with roads, hiking trails, mountain biking tracks and basic campsites allowing visitors to wander the park at will and enjoy the solitude of the bush veld. The campsites feature toilets, showers and braai areas but visitors should still be prepared for some rough living.
