Sani Mountain Escape offers an authentic escape hatch from reality. At the top of the legendary Sani Pass, the lodge and backpackers is a definite bucket-list experience and an iconic destination for more than 50 years.

High on the Drakensberg escarpment just inside the border of Lesotho, Sani Mountain Escape offers comfortable accommodation beneath a sea of stars at night and breathtaking landscapes by day. Spectacular views, cosy fires, adventure and great hospitality await any guest.

As a high-altitude destination, weather patterns vary dramatically from sea level norms and can change at a moment’s notice. Temperatures can plummet to -21C at night, so be sure to pack warm clothing! A waterproof jacket and waterproof shoes are essential if you wish to go hiking – and you really should! The scenery is spectacular.

Valid passports are required at both South African and Lesotho border posts. To enhance ease of entry into the country and ensure your safety, we request copies of all guests’ passports. These will be verified against the physical document by our friendly check-in staff on your arrival.

Closure of the Sani Pass - Extension of your booking:
Should the Pass be closed by either Border Post Authorities, or at the discretion of the Lodge Management and you are unable to fulfil your booking for those reasons, your booking will still be valid for 3 months from the date of your initial arrival. Please to contact our reservations office on 078 634 7496 or [email protected] to request alternative dates.
Inability to drive up the Sani Pass or from within Lesotho:
Sani Mountain Escape are not liable to refund your booking should you be unable to reach the Lodge due to lack of driving experience, not driving with a 4 x 4 vehicle, or driving a vehicle which has insufficient ground clearance. We will endeavor to assist should your vehicle get stuck but must stress that we cannot guarantee that a suitable vehicle and/or driver will be availble on short notice. A minimum transport fee of R500 will be levied and may be more depending on the circumstances, the distance, the amount of persons and use of equipment.
