This enormous fresh water lake brings life to the valley, and besides being home to a number of organisms, brings you to the island of Samatian. Parking Fee at Lake Breeze payable at Lake Breeze: 500 $6ksh per vehicle for the duration of the stay.
Baringo County Council fees payable at barrier Kampi ya Samaki
Cultural Visits ksh 800 $9 per person plus boat fee.
Gratuities
Activities include:
• Scenic boat trips in traditional Sesse canoes to view the prolific birdlife of Baringo (over 450 species) as well as crocodile & hippo. You can also throw fish for fish eagles, offering spectacular photographic opportunities.
• Fishing: Take a rod & try your luck at fishing for catfish, barbell & tilapia. Dough, bacon & worms are the best bait & a basic hand line or stick rod with hook & line will do you fine. Nixon can show you the best fishing spots. Please beware of slippery rock surfaces at the water’s edge.
• Nature & bird walks over the top of Samatian to see the birds & extraordinary plant-life.
• Trips to visit the local Njemps or Pokot tribes.
• A beautiful walk around Giraffe Island. This is home to 8 endangered Rothchild’s (formally known as Baringo) giraffe, ostrich, warthogs, impalas & hyrax. The rangers will be happy to guide you.
As a guest of Samatian Island, a few things concerning your stay :-
1. Kindly call Richard, the caretaker, when leaving Nakuru to give the boats ample time to position themselves on the mainland.
2. For all visitors driving to Samatian you will be required to pay Council fees at the barrier on arrival at Kampi Ya Samaki. After the barrier drive into Kampi Ya Samaki village, when you get to the T junction take a right & then an immediate left to Lake Breeze Jetty, then follow the signs. You will be charge a fee of 500/- per vehicle for the duration of your stay.
3. We have 2 boats for transport and ferrying luggage. These boats are designed to carry no more than 7 passengers at any time & under all circumstances must be driven only by our driver. Boats have life jackets. Please note that the lake often gets rough in the evenings & bear this in mind if arriving at this time. A return transfer to the Island and back per group is included in the price of your stay. Any additional transfers should be paid to Richard at a rate of Kshs 2000 per return trip. If you would like to use the boat for excursions the running rate for this is
Kshs 2000 per ½ hour. Please pay Richard cash for this directly and he will issue you a Samatian Island ltd receipt.
4. Kindly let the cooks know as soon as possible the meal plans & timings to give them sufficient time to get your meals prepared. Please don’t forget to bring your own drinking water and ice as well as all your food for your stay. We have a fully equipped kitchen with a five-burner gas cooker with oven. Also supplied is a large electric fridge with a small deep freeze. All crockery & cutlery is supplied for up to twelve people. Visitors can buy basic goods, sodas & beer in Kampi Ya Samaki. Salt, pepper, matches, etc. are provided. There is a laundry basket in your room or bathroom. If you need any items washed please leave in the basket. Please wash your own underwear & delicate clothing. Hot water is provided by means of a kuni booster & will be lit each morning & evening.
5. Breakages & damages need to be reported to Richard & will be charged to the guest party.
6. We have solar power at Samatian. A power outlet is provided in most rooms to recharge video cameras, telephones etc. Under NO circumstances must a hair dryer be used from any outlet on the island. Please turn off all lights when you leave the rooms to conserve battery power & keep away flying insects. Please bring your own torches for walking between rooms at night. A night watchman patrols & can be of assistance during the night.
7. Guests are asked to take their empty bottles with them on departure. This ensures our human footprint on the island is kept to a minimum.
8. Guests are requested to vacate the Island by 10.00 a.m. on their day of departure. Guests are requested NOT to check in prior to 12pm to give sufficient time to the staff to prepare the rooms. (Unless prior arrangement has been made with management)
9. Please support the Ruko Community Conservation Trust by visiting the Rothchild’s giraffe island. Kindly note there will is a fee of Kshs 500 per person, payable to Richard, who will arrange a receipt from the Trust office on the mainland. There should be cubes to feed the 8 giraffe and you can get very close to them, it’s a truly worth while experience. There are also Impala, warthogs and ostrich you may be lucky to get up close to.
10. As customary in many establishments, a gratuity to the person in charge of Samatian Island is accepted practice.
11. Remember that there are hippo and crocodile in the vicinity of the island & swimming in the lake is at your own risk.
12. Malaria is rare in Baringo. However please remember to carry mosquito repellent & cover up in the evenings as a precaution.
13. Each guest must understand that he/she is now staying at Samatian Island entirely at his/her own risk & that Samatian Island Ltd, the Withey & Roberts families do not accept liability for any injury to or death of any person or the loss or destruction of or damage to any property upon the premises, whether arising from fire, theft or any other cause (including but not limited to wild animal attack) and by whomsoever caused or arising from the negligence or wrongful act of any person in the employment of the Island. Each guest must sign this Indemnity & Registration form, warranting that he/she is fully authorized to sign both for him/herself and for and bind all persons represented by him/her or for whom he/she is responsible, to these conditions of residence at Samatian Island. Kindly append your signature below and produce to Richard on arrival.
