These historic 1934 SAR carriages were brought to this location in the 60’s as a weekend retreat. They have been renovated and now form the hub for the Num-Num five-day trail, as well as other two, three, and four-day hiking trails on the estate.
We offer seven compartments, sleeping one to four people per compartment, providing a total of 20 berths. With a kitchen, bar, braai, and shop, this is the ideal start or end to any hike. Hikers should bring their own sleeping bags, pillows and towels.

Very quiet and rustic, we loved the old world feeling. Don't expect a 5 star lodge its very basic but we loved the peace. Everything you need is at hand.

We stayed one night in the Pongola Express Camp. We arrived in the evening and nobody was there to greet us even though we warned in advance about the late hour of our arrival. The isolation is bad. The carriages are quite cold on winter. The comfort is rudimentary. However the style is unique.

We had such a fantasic time on our one night stay at the Pongola express camp. The rustic feel of sleeping in the carriages is one to experience. It gives you an Old World feel, yet with modern benefits. Our host, Donna, was incredibly friendly and hospitable. We will be back!
