Mary-Jo Bed and Breakfast is a privately owned hospitality management which was established by Mr Werner Coetzee after he realized the hospitality potential of the Rehoboth town which lies merely 85 km from Namibia's capital Windhoek. Rehoboth is filled with a rich background of culture and heritage as witnessed by a number of churches and historic museums dotted around the town. The heritage and culture is rooted in the inimitable history of the Baster people are originally from the Cape in South Africa. In the late 1890's, the Baster trekked to Namibia from South Africa due to mounting pressure and competition for land with the white inhabitants of the Cape Colony. They settled in Rehoboth and are proud of their historical background which they say made them different from the rest of the colored communities found in Namibia.
Notwithstanding the meaning of baster, which is derived from the Dutch word for "bastard" or crossbreed the Basters proudly use the term as an indication of their history in the same way the Metis/mixed people of Canada. Scenic views are Acacia woodland, sweet-thorn and candle-pod acacia trees characterize the environment surrounding the Rehoboth town formerly known as the Rehoboth Gebied, where Basters have been settled for more than 100 years.
Mostly the home language for the Basters is Afrikaans which they share with many white Namibians however English is favored for communication with non-residents guests which make this community bilingual.
