Maasai Trails is based in the Loita Hills, on the western edge of the Great Rift Valley just north of the Tanzanian border. Jan’s Camp, the base for all the walking trips, is set on a ridge overlooking the rolling Loita Hills. The Loita Forest is an area steeped in history and Maasai culture.

Meaning "Forest of the Lost Child" this area is an Africa most travellers never see, straddled as it is between two iconic and more frequented destinations of the Serengeti and Maasai Mara. The hills have an average altitude of 2,000 m and the Rift Valley floor is more than a kilometre below. It is one of the few non-gazetted indigenous forests in Kenya, with great cultural and spiritual value.

Two types of accommodation are offered at Jan’s Camp, each complementing and enhancing their surroundings. The three Trail Huts each have their own toilets and shower areas. Each hut has a different character and accommodates up to two guests. Should guests wish to self-cater, there is also a private kitchen and dining tent. There are also two Family Tents located on the edge of the forest which can accommodate six people each. These tents come complete with a private toilet and showers, as well as a kitchen and dining area.

Should guests wish to take part in the walking trail safaris, there is a small mess tent with tables, chairs and all crockery and cutlery. Camp staff on the trail organize constructing the tents, kitchen and the mess tent before guests arrive, and a chef and waiter are also sent on the trail, as well as guards.

Since both the trail huts and the tents have their own kitchens and dining areas, a self-catering rate is also available as well as a chef, if requested. Solar power is available at Jans Camp, but not on the walking trails. An Internet link is available at Jan’s Camp.
