Discover a peaceful wilderness escape where river, plains, and sky meet in perfect harmony. Nestled in the quieter reaches of the Okavango Eastern Panhandle, this hidden gem offers immersive nature experiences, exceptional birdlife, and eco-friendly comfort. Kashete Plains Expedition & Campsite (KPE) is a serene, eco-conscious retreat set along the edge of the Okavango Eastern Panhandle, a region known for its unspoilt wetlands, deep channels, and remarkable biodiversity. The Panhandle serves as the main watercourse feeding the Okavango Delta, flowing from Angola and forming a landscape of papyrus-lined lagoons, rich wildlife habitats, and expansive riverine forests. Guests can enjoy sightings of hippos, large crocodiles, and elusive antelope species such as the sitatunga, renowned for their agility in water. Birdwatching is exceptional, with notable species including Pels Fishing Owl, White-backed Night-Heron, African Skimmer, Western Banded Snake-Eagle, and the vibrant Carmine Bee-eater during summer. For anglers, the Panhandle offers one of Southern Africa's finest fishing events 'the annual barbel run' when schools of catfish move upstream, attracting tiger fish in thrilling feeding frenzies. The peak fishing months fall between September and October. KPE is ideally positioned along the Kashete Plains and close to Shakawe Village, a Ramsar Wetland City, as well as the UNESCO-listed Tsodilo Hills. Accessible via a short 1.5 km turn-off from the main gravel road between Mohembo and Seronga, the campsite is suitable even for non-4WD vehicles and conveniently located 30 minutes from Shakawe. Designed with sustainability in mind, KPE integrates green energy solutions and low-impact structures that blend naturally into the surroundings. The intimate campsite offers two semi-luxury tents set on raised decks overlooking the marshy plains, three camping grounds, inviting firepits, and a small open kitchen where wholesome meals are prepared. Activities include birdwatching, boating, nature walks, cultural village visits, fishing, and sunset cruises, providing an ideal base for couples, families, and small groups seeking an authentic and tranquil experience close to nature.
