Here, alongside the vineyards of Hamilton Russell and flanked by those of Bouchard Finlayson, you'll come across Earth Cottage. It is situated on a little tarred road, just off the R320, which is the Hermanus Wine Route. There is no need to travel on any dirt road; the tarred road leads right to your garden gate!
The self-catering cottage is comfortable and cosy. There is a double bed in the bedroom, and a single bed and sleeper couch in the lounge. This makes it the ideal stay-over spot for a couple, or a family of three or four. The lounge and dining area leads to the front stoep, which looks out over one of our paddocks. Our Arabian horses are almost always in sight. In the kitchen you'll find a four-burner gas stove, microwave/convection/grill oven combination, kettle, fridge/freezer, washing machine and ample cutlery and crockery.
You'll be close to other cultural and natural attractions, as the pleasures of the rest of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Hermanus, Walker Bay, the Lagune and Onrust are just down the road. Woolies Food is at the Engen petrol station, just 5,5 km away. La Vierge restaurant is 2 km. Plaaskombuis is about 800 metres.
ACCESSIBILITY. A flight of stairs leads down to the cottage. The steps are uneven in height and width, and could be daunting or challenging for older or infirm visitors and people with special needs. Help is at hand to carry your luggage; just ask. Inside, there’s one step from kitchen to lounge, and another from lounge to bathroom. Two steps lead down from the dining/lounge area to the bedroom.
The bath is a beautiful Victorian-style tub. Elderly or infirm guests may find it a challenge to climb into. The shower is over the bath.
A REAL WORKING FARM. This is a place of animals, and we live in harmony with nature. Faunae include insects (especially in summer), other crawlies, fynbos mice, our beautiful Golden Retrievers who will be your charming neighbours, the Arabian horses, and various birds. We prefer to use fly screens rather than pesticides, and to relocate - rather than eradicate - any pesky critters.
THE WATER. The water has a slight honey-brown colour. This is pure mountain spring water, simply tinted by the roots of fynbos plants. It is safe for cooking, washing up, bathing and drinking. Even so, shop-bought drinking water is provided.
SELF-CATERING. You're in charge of your own food preparation. Earth Cottage is not serviced. If you’re staying for longer than 5 nights, a clean set of bedding and towels will be provided and rubbish/garbage will be removed.
