Braai, Burning and Butts
Being South Africans, proud of our offerings, we feel a stay on the farm is not complete without a braai (barbeque). For people wishing to braai, we could either assist you or supply you with wood. We have designated areas and containers for making fire. We request our patrons and guests not to gather their own wood as it affects the ecosystems we are trying to protect. You are welcome to bring your own wood or we can supply you with a crate of wood for R20
Runaway fires could occur when burning is not limited to demarcated contained spots. Please acquire about such spots when you wish to make a fire other than the fire places supplied at your cottage, camping or picnic spot.
Please do not smoke inside the cottages. When you smoke outside please make sure your cigarettes are put out properly and the butts discarded in an ashtray.
When you’ve never used a green loo you might be filled with shock and at the idea! But relax, we will ease you into the etiquette of the N-WC (NO WATER CLOSET). Firstly you need to know, IT DOES NOT smell. Coming from city life we decided before letting our guests loose on our green loos, we would build our own one and try it until it worked 100% odourless! And, it does! So, here is how it works: Next to the can we supply wood shavings and ash. The bottom of the potty is filled with shavings which covers the pee-pee smell. Once you have pee-pee’d just add some shavings on top. When you poo you cover it lavishly with the ash and then the whole lot with wood shavings! Your loo paper also goes in the potty. Every second day we change the potty and the waste gets to become dust in a compost heap.
Count how many litres of water you save every time you visit our N-WC if you consider every flush uses 8 litres of water. Thanks!
We are blessed enough to have approximately 1km of river frontage, so do allow swimming and fishing (by prior arrangement for permit purposes). These activities are done at your own risk. (You would be required to fill in an indemnity form when entering our farm. Please adhere to the rules and embark at designated areas to avoid getting hurt.
We are pet friendly (by prior arrangement). We have specially enclosed areas for pets that stay over at selected cottages. When walking your dogs please keep them on a leash.
Animals on the farm
We share our wooden farm cottage with two dogs (Kevin & Button), two cats (Basil Sun & Fennel Moon) a potbelly piggy (Varkmeedah) and our many chickens under orchestration of Haandrik the cock whose crowing watch can lose track of time at odd hours. We have cattle from a neighbour roaming the farm.
As for the wilder country animals; we have a few have buck, long and short ear hare, tortoises and fish eagles on the neighbouring land which come to play in our airspace.
We have the odd critters like mongooses, otters, snakes and scorpions but they are seldom seen and would not attack unless purposely disturbed.
As insects go we have the odd mosquito, fly or tick.
We grow our own herbs and plants to combat pests and serve as a natural repellent. The very same green house has herbs and plants for bites and other medicinal uses. We recommend however, you come prepared with 10ml tea tree oil just in case of cooking burns, bites or if you left your ode cologne at home!
We offer an English or Vegetarian breakfast at R50 per head. Please arrange this when making your booking. You can have a sit down breakfast at the “breck-vis” room/workshop next to our house.
On request we can provide picnic baskets with cheese, fruit/pickles and biscuits @ R150 per basket excluding beverages. Cold meat options (also without beverages) consisting of the same basic basket costs R200 per basket. Other options are available i.e. fruit only baskets for the cottage. We also provide braai packs made to order.
~ All these options are only available by prior arrangement.
We offer a “mains” only, two courses or three course dinners at R150, R180 or R200 respectively. We offer soft drinks at an additional cost as we are not licensed. We charge a R25 corkage per bottle if you supply your own wine.
For your convenience the keys include a farm gate key and a solar torch key ring.
The keys we provide you with can be dropped off at our farm gate in the red box on your departure.
Please keep the gate closed and as you find it ie. if it is locked please lock it again. If the gate’s padlock is open on the chain please close it in the same way as you find it. Although the padlock might be open the gate must remain closed at all times to ensure the cattle and buck stay on the farm. Many thanks for your co-operation in this regard.
