We are, except for cooking and water heating, powered by solar power.
There is no TV or DSTV out of personal choice
There is limited MTN reception on the front porch and enough to get messages and hear the phone ring on the kitchen windowsill facing paternoster. There is no other reception for other networks unless you climb the hill to the north of the house. We do have enough power to charge phone and computers, preferably during the day.
The house is fully equipped with bedding and towels.
There is always toilet paper there but we do encourage people to bring and leave what they don’t use. We also encourage people to bring wood and charcoal. All garbage is to be carried off site when one leaves including bottle and cans for recycling. We normally use the municipal bins in St Helena Bay.
There are 4 bedrooms. Bedroom 1: has a three tier bunk bed and two single beds – generally gets used by families or to put ALL the kids into. Kind of like a dormitory. Bedroom 2: right next to 1 has two single beds which can be pushed together if necessary. These two bedrooms share two bathrooms. Both with toilets – one with a shower and the other with a bath. In all, it will sleep 11 comfortably assuming 6 are couples or at least really good friends
Living room: has a wood burning fire place, a 10 seater dining table and two large couches, a bookshelf with games and books and a corner cupboard for glasses, a wooden utility table next to a washing up sink – from the days that we did not have a kitchen.
A 4 burner gas stove with small oven. Kitchen: Exceptionally well equipped with pretty much everything and then some. Large very good fridge and freezer, several working tops and a two burner cast iron gas cooker, a high pressure gas Wok burner, fireplace to braai on and to keep the room warm in winter, 6 seater dining table. Two outer rooms: Queen size bed and en-suite small bathroom with toilet, sink and shower. They are identical mirror images of one another. Boat shed: Houses the batteries for the solar system and also the gas bottle for the hot outdoor shower.
