We normally serve dinner by the campfire at night for small groups. Our cuisine is mostly African but the chef has experience in all types of dishes. It’s advisable to state your meal preference before travel.
The resort has the most comfortable accommodation facilities on the lake shore. The well manicured gardens, friendly staff and great food prepared from fresh produce make your stay memorable. Crayfish is the speciality. There is also a variety fruits and vegetables available.
The venue is ideal for stop overs to and from the gorilla parks of Bwindi and Mgahinga. It provides a quite rest in the countryside after the strenuous gorilla tracking. Other national parks within a few hours' drive are Lake Mburo and Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Lake Bunyonyi and her islands are undisputedly some of the most beautiful parts of Uganda. Located at a high altitude of 6500 feet above sea level, in the extreme southwest of the country, this picturesque, irregularly shaped lake shares its shores with Rwanda. The surrounding evergreen hillsides, as elsewhere in this region, are intensively cultivated in terraces. There are opportunities for caving, exploring the Islands of Akampene, Bushara, Bwama and Sharp’s Island. The islands have a rich history which will be narrated to you by the local guides.
The guided canoe expedition is a famous activity as you visit the islands around and the beautiful hills. You can engage in crayfishing and photography. The Lake is bilharzias-free and is one of the clearest water bodies in Uganda. Note that it is the deepest crater lake in the country.
The surrounding hills and islands are home to the Bakiga tribe who are organized in clans. They are agriculturalists growing Irish potatoes, peas, millet, beans and sorghum. From sorghum they produce a popular local brew called Omuramba.
A guided visit around the village will give you a chance to interact with the local people. We can also organize home visits where you can participate in the daily activities. You can join them in digging and weeding their gardens, you can plant a fruit tree, make a canoe, donate a pig, goat or cow or assist the family to build a better house where they can host tourists. The households visited will be paid for hosting you.
Lake Bunyonyi is safe for swimming. Its bilharzia-free but can be very cold, especially in July. To avoid thermal shock, first cool your body by splashing water onto yourself. From the pier, you can also enjoy the ambience of the lake and listen to the bird songs. The pier also gives a wonderful view of the Kyahugye, Mananira and Bushara Islands, which you may explore on a leisurely boat ride or a simple canoe.
