We start the day with a visit to the world-renowned Babylonstoren Wine Estate to view their magical garden. Set within 3.5 hectares (8 acres) of cultivated fruit and vegetables, the big garden at Babylonstoren is at the heart of the farm. It was inspired by the historic Company’s Garden in Cape Town, which supplied sailing ships of the Dutch East India Company with fresh vegetables and fruit during the days when the Cape was a halfway station between Europe and Asia. But they also link back to the mythological hanging gardens of Babylon. Those were thought to have been created by Nebuchadnezzar in the sixth century BC, for his wife who longed for the mountains and valleys of her youth
Our next point of call will be at Môreson Wine Estate. Môreson’s Charcuterie and Wine Tasting is their own twist on novel wine tasting. Stretch out at the Farm Grocer bar counter while you sample a range of Môreson Wines, each individually paired with Neil Jewell’s mouth-watering yummy homemade Charcuterie.
We then make our way to the historic Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate (Est. 1694) where you will enjoy a wine and food pairing (2 white + 2 red and 4 canapé) in the owner’s private gallery. During the winter months, you will be close to the crackling fireplace while during summer you will be able to tickle your taste buds in the air-conditioned tasting room and enjoy the view of the majestic mountains outside.
Next up is a pairing of various Pinotages with South African delicacies.
Lunch will be booked at either one of the wine farms or a local restaurant in Franschhoek.
Then finally at the foothills of the Simonsberg, in South Africa’s most celebrated Franschhoek wine valley, lies Vrede & Lust Wine Estate. Vrede & Lust is a family owned and managed wine estate. Here we will taste 5 different wines in the most serene surroundings.
