Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve

Western Cape

The rugged karoo landscape of the Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve offers plenty of activities and scenery to enjoy for visitors.

Located just a short distance south of the quaint town of Robertson, Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve is well positioned on the Cape wine route. The reserve is a sanctuary for various wildlife such as klipspringer, grysbok, grey rhebuck, springbok and baboon. Caracal are also spotted on rare occasions. The bird population consists of about 175 species.

For hikers there are two routes to consider, namely the easy Heron Trail and the more challenging Rooikat Trail, both with a distance of 3 km and 19 km respectively. During summer months it's best to start the trails very early to avoid the extreme mid-day heat that can occur in the area. There is also a 8 km mountain biking trail that will take you through the reserve.
