The little Bushveld town of Vaalwater is set on the southern border of the Waterberg Biosphere, a UNESCO Reserve of considerable beauty and biodiversity – and home to the Big Five. It serves as a gateway into the Waterberg, providing travellers with essential services including banking, groceries, petrol and diesel, a post office, and doctors.
For travellers en route to Botswana it’s an essential pit stop, offering a number of small cafes, restaurants and craft shops. Just outside Vaalwater on the road to Melkrivier is the Church of St John the Baptist, a quaint thatched church designed by renowned architect Sir Herbert Baker. Also of interest are visits to several herb farms. Popular self-drive routes in the Waterberg centre around Lephalale and the route from Thabazimbi to Alldays.
