The Swartberg Nature Reserve is a long stretch of land that lies just north of Oudtshroon and south of Prince Albert.
The reserve has a rich history, with rock paintings holding testimony to early San occupation before the arrival of the first Europeans. Today the area is a World Heritage Site and boasts a diverse collection of regional flora and wildlife such as antelope, baboon, leopard and over 130 bird species.
Visitors are welcome to enjoy the many attractions the reserve has on offer. Along the Swartberg Pass you can stop your car and enjoy the scenery from viewing points. The Gamka River and Gamkapoort Dam is a great location to try out canoeing and even sailing. Fishing is welcome, but will require a freshwater angling licence. There are various hiking routes available to try out, best attempted during the milder periods of the year from April to May, and September to October due to the major regional temperature extremes in summer and winter. The Swartberg 4x4 route is also recommended.
