Somerset West is a pretty upmarket suburb of Cape Town lying on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain, enjoying amazing views of False Bay and the Hottentots-Holland Mountains.

Going wild isn’t usually on most visitors’ itinerary but there is some great mountain biking at Lourensford Estate and hiking in the stunning Helderberg Nature Reserve. Golfers can tee off in beautiful surrounds at Erinvale Golf Club or Somerset West Golf Club. Not far are the stunning beaches of Strand and Gordon’s Bay.

If you’ve got kids take them to Monkey Town Primate Sanctuary for a fun and fascinating experience with 200 apes and monkeys ranging from chimpanzees to spider monkeys and cuddly looking lemurs.

A visit to Somerset West wouldn’t be complete without exploring the magnificent grounds and historical buildings of Vergelegen Wine Estate, finishing off with a tasting of their wonderful wines. Other noteworthy vineyards are Lourensford and Morgenster Estate, who also produce award-wining olive oil.

Somerset West accommodation is generally of a high standard and offers numerous options ranging from self-catering to top hotels. If you really want to splurge, then book a stay at the elegant NH The Lord Charles hotel, host to former South African president, Nelson Mandela.

Keen for a blast in the Somerset West Winelands? Ride through vineyards with amazing views of Table Mountain, False Bay and the Helderberg Mountains. www.kamazooquad.co.za.
