Shelly Beach is a popular holiday destination situated between Margate and Port Shepstone on the Hibiscus Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. Its name is derived from the hordes of miniature pink lady shells which wash up onto the shores after high tide. Shelly Beach has enough outdoor activities and entertainment options to fill up your days while you’re on holiday.
If you’re a watersports enthusiast you will have plenty to choose from, such as snorkelling, diving, canoeing, fishing and boating in the warm waters. You can expect to see a large variety of exquisite tropical fish and coral reefs. There are a number of well-known reefs to explore, including Potato Reef, Bo Boyi Reef, Adda Reef and Arena Reef. The surrounding lagoons and tidal pools also make this place ideal for family vacations. There are charter boats available for whale-and dolphin watching, deep-sea fishing and scuba diving expeditions.
If you’re on holiday with the kids make sure you take them to Pure Venom Reptile Park which is situated on an old estate in Izotsha near Shelly Beach. Some of the most venomous snakes on earth are contained in the park, and if you want to get an adrenaline rush then you can even have a photo taken with a mamba, a piper, a cobra or a viper. The Park presents an interesting educational experience, guided tours and snake demonstrations.
If you’re in need of any amenities, the Shelly Beach Shopping Centre has plenty of shops as well as cinemas and restaurants. There are also a number of other pristine beaches located nearby, such as Oslo Beach and Ramsgate, and the Margate Country Club and Margate Art Museum are only ten kilometres away.
