About Oviston Nature Reserve
Situated on the southern side of the Gariep Dam, the Oviston Nature Reserve is home to an exciting variety of wildlife and birds. The area offers a range of fun outdoor activities and it is a popular fly-fishing venue offering an abundance of Yellow fish species. It dam and river is an idyllic place for sunset cruises and canoeing.
Keen mountain bikers will find plenty of open stretches with adventure rides into the Oviston Nature Reserve. Fun quad biking trips take groups of 14 or less on the wildlife viewing trails. Also a birders' paradise, Oviston is home to fish eagles, black eagles, blue cranes, secretary birds, Steppe buzzards, a variety of kingfishers and many more.
Visitors have the chance of spotting aardvark, aardwolf, African wildcat, bat-eared fox, black wildebeest, black-backed jackal, blesbuck, brown hyena, Burchell's zebra, Cape clawless otter, Cape fox, ground squirrel, Cape hare, porcupine, caracal, baboon, common duiker, eland, kudu, mountain reedbuck, gemsbok, red hartebeest, small spotted cat, small spotted genet, Smith's red rock rabbit, hedgehog, spotted-necked otter, springbuck, steenbok, suricate, vervet monkey, water mongoose and yellow mongoose.
