About Cango Caves

Visit a sparkling ancient African cave system in the Karoo. One of the major attractions in the Garden Route and Oudtshoorn area is the Cango Caves, which extend for kilometres into the extensive limestone hills.

Situated in the Swartberg Mountains, 30km north of Oudtshoorn are the 20 million year-old Precambrian caves. Africa's largest show cave system is definitely worth a visit just to see the beautiful crystal and flow structures alone.

Although the massive system of tunnels and chambers stretch for over four kilometres, only a quarter of this is open to visitors. You can do a guided standard one hour tour or tackle the more adventurous one and a half hour tour, which includes some tight squeezes.

Reasonably priced, however really large group sizes (150+ people per tour). Very commercial, but worth seeing.

Great experience on the 1 hour heritage tour - we did book in advance but that did not seem necessary. Excellent guides.

The caves are simply amazing, although doing the adventure tour really takes a lot out of you. My favourite part was the climb up the devil's chimney, wow that was exhausting but what a lot of fun!!! I will highly recommend a visit to the caves when visiting Oudtshoorn.

A must see! The Cango Caves are a wonder of nature and should be on everyone's bucket list. The formations are breathtaking and everywhere you look is another photo opportunity. I love that the formations are now bathed in white light rather than the coloured of old. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. I have small kids so we did the 1 hour Heritage Tour which was very satisfying. Highly recommended.
