Established in 1895 and home to almost 53 million works, the New York Public Library is the second largest in the US, and third largest in the world. The main branch in 5th Avenue was built at a cost of $9 million, and houses over 121 km of shelves. Its main reading room, with its 15m high ceilings, draws visitors and locals alike in their droves.
