Mdala Nature Reserve

Mpumalanga

Mdala Nature Reserve is one of the best places close to Pretoria for birdwatching. Situated only an hour and a half drive from the capital, you can see anything from shrike, southern white-crowned helmet-shrike, lourie, to laughing dove, red-winged starling, gabar goshawk, and lilac-breasted roller.

Visitors can also spot mammals such as zebra, impala, kudu, waterbuck, and red haartebeest. There are some seasonal streams that flow through the reserve and an expansive 8 000 hectares of rocky outcrop and open grassland.

Day visitors and overnight visitors are allowed in the reserve. However, it is best to call the reserve before driving as it is sometimes closed due to water shortages. To make the most out of your trip remember to bring lots of water, delicious treats, binoculars and a camera.
