Makalali Private Game Reserve

Makalali Private Game Reserve embodies a bold conservation initiative to re-establish the early wildlife migration routes between Kruger National Park and the Drakensberg Mountains. This refuge for the Big 5 and numerous other species of wildlife is just a 5-hour drive from Joburg.

Tucked away in this bushveld retreat and on the banks of the Makhutswi River are four superlative safari camps. Ethnic architecture with thatched spires, earthy walls and unusual African decor add to the unique experience.

And kids are not forgotten at Makalali. The Mini-Rangers Course offers kids between the ages of 6 to 15 years an adventurous learning experience under the tutelage of a selected ranger and tracker. Topics include identifying animal tracks, survival in the bush, first aid, medicinal plants, and rope and fire making. At the end of the two-day course, graduation ceremonies are held to welcome the newest Makalali Mini-Ranger to the team, with a certificate presented by the kid’s ranger and tracker.
