Luderitz is a beautiful, unique little town that lies with its back to the bay and the rugged, but beautiful Namibian desert in front. The distinctly Bavarian, colonial-style architecture lends an atmosphere not easily matched and an Old World charm that envokes the spirit of the turn of the 19th Century.

A myriad of bays and islands surround this jewel of the desert, including Halifax Island which is inhabited by a colony of penguins from Antarctica. The stunning and majestic Bogenfels Arch rises like a giant claw from the Atlantic Ocean anchoring it to shore.

Historically the area is richer than most and The Goerke Haus, as well as the The Felsenkirche are great examples of the culturally inspired architecture. Beautiful buildings line the streets, each with its own charm, and the local museum with its interesting collection of artefacts captures the historical and current nuances of the area.

There are quite a few places to eat, whether it is for breakfast lunch or dinner; Luderitz as a town specializes in seafood varieties fresh from ‘its’ ocean. A bunch of cruises that depart from here are available and a pairing of oysters, bubbly and sights of the resident marine life is a close-to-nature indulgence that should not be missed.

If travelling by road, plan to arrive early – the brooding and temperamental sand storms are common in the afternoon, and is juxtaposed by the tranquil mood that permeates every nook and cranny of this unique desert oasis. Luderitz is a photographer’s, a nature lover’s and a history buff’s paradise.
