Limietberg Nature Reserve

Western Cape

Limietberg Nature Reserve covers an area of approximately 117 000 ha, situated in the Du Toitskloof mountain range near Paarl. The terrain encompasses steep kloofs, mountain fynbos, deep valleys, and some indigenous forest, with the famous Breede and Berg rivers flowing through the reserve. Du Toits Peak is the highest point in the reserve, standing at 1996 m tall.

Visitors can spot a number of mammals, including dassie, baboons, klipspringer, and some bird species such as the Cape sugarbird and the protea canary. There are a few breathtaking hiking trails to meander on, and some unique sights to look out for. These include a cross erected by Italian prisoners of war, bushman paintings and an old manganese mine.

The best time to explore the reserve is during summer or spring, as the cold and wet weather conditions during winter can be dangerous for hiking. Please note that a maximum of 120 people are allowed in the reserve so visitors are required to arrive as early as possible. The Tweede Tol picnic area is also now open on a first come first serve basis to day visitors.
