Mabusa Nature Reserve is perfect for a day's visit for anyone in the Gauteng area. It is situated about 100 km east of Pretoria, inside the province of Mpumalanga. A 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended for this reserve as most of the trails are very basic. The habitat encompasses deep valleys with fresh springs and rocky, grassy hills. Mabusa is a great attraction for bird lovers; you can spot anything from a pearl owlet and green-capped eremomela, to a short-toed rock-thrush and Shelley's francolin. The reserve is also home to several species of antelope, so be sure to bring your binoculars with to make the most out of your visit. You can also enjoy a picnic in the reserve while listening to the call of the birds.
