Sri Lanka’s second largest city is set in the scenic hills above a rich area of tropical plantations. Kandy is famously home to one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites on the planet, Sri Dalada Maligawa, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is also known for its art, culture and history, and a visit here would be amiss without witnessing the evening fire walking ritual and performances by traditional Kandyan dancers and drummers.
