Faerie Glen Nature Reserve
Gauteng
Faerie Glen Nature Reserve encompasses 128 ha of a grassy and rocky quartzite landscape, with a number of walking and hiking trails. The three routes, Hadeda, Acacia and Kiepersol, vary in difficulty, with a couple of steep sections which have loose rocks. The reserve is situated in Faerie Glen in the east of Pretoria and forms part of the well-known Moreleta Spruit Nature Trail.
The best time for birdwatching is between September and April. Birdwatchers will be in their comfort zone with over 150 recorded species of birds to be seen, including African black duck, brown-backed honeybird, Cape grassbird, marsh warbler, crimson-breasted shrike and village weaver. A number of trees unique to the area as well as insects can be spotted in the reserve. Some smaller wildlife can also be seen, such as hedgehogs, mongoose, porcupines, bush babies and hares.
There are no picnic or braai facilities in the reserve itself, but the Plumago Tea Garden situated at the entrance is perfect for relaxing with a refreshing drink and enjoying the scenery.
The reserve is open every day from 6 am until 6 pm. For more information please contact 012 358 1510.
