The Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary lies in the heart of Pretoria and is a popular weekend picnic spot for families. Named after the renowned ornithologist, J Austin Roberts, the sanctuary is situated within the Walkerspruit System where two streams flow into wetland basins, attracting numerous species of water birds.
The Blue Crane Restaurant is right on the shoreline and overlooks the dam and adjacent reed beds where blue crane, grey crowned crane, rock doves, speckled pigeons and various waterfowl can be seen feeding. Keen birders will enjoy the convenient bird hide or joining a guided walk.
Opening hours: September to April from 07:00 to 18:00 and May to August from 07:00 to 17:00
