Abe Bailey Nature Reserve

Gauteng

Situated near Carletonville on the West Rand is the Abe Bailey Nature Reserve, a delight for novices and experienced birder’s alike. The fact that the reserve is fairly small in extent (a modest 4 200 hectares), together with the combination of bush, wetland and grassland habitats makes for excellent viewing of the 220-plus species of birds. Just some of the birds you can expect to see include the Yellow-billed Stork, Greater Flamingo, Goliath Heron, Little Bittern, Black Crake, African Rail, and the African Fish-Eagle.

There are currently no bird hides but the birds are best spotted on foot and it is advised to ask the helpful reserve staff for directions to the best tracks/trails depending on what you would like to see.

The reserve is named after diamond tycoon Sir Abe Bailey who once hunted in the area and what was his hunting lodge is now the main office.
