Hamelin Guest House is a six double bedroom guest house.
The house was originally built as two maisonettes in the early sixties by a gentleman of German origin who worked in the harbour service. It is believed that his primary job as a health officer was the eradication of vermin from the port as a rat catcher.
The house was named Hamelin in honor of his work and the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin.
It is situated on the southern side of the port and is particularly central for easy access to the harbour and the city center areas although located in a green leafy suburb on Durban's most prominent natural landmark the Bluff.
An impressive headland forming the southern quayside of the port, the Bluff comprises several suburbs and one of the city's best-kept secrets; the finest bathing, surfing and fishing beaches in the area.
Other attractions are the golf course and yacht club as well as the local wild life of vervet monkeys and mongoose. The Bluff is thus also popular holiday spot.
Although all rooms are non smoking, provision is made for smokers and braai/BBQ facilities are available for use.
The establishment is also gay friendly
It is also popular with business executives as the Bluff has easy access to the outer ring road for onward travel to King Shaka International Airport without the hassle of CBD traffic congestion.
Just a short trip south are the southern coast beaches of Amanzimtoti and Kingsburgh and not much further are the lower southern beaches of Kwa Zulu Natal
Within an hour’s drive inland are several game reserves inclusive of Tala Valley which is home to the endangered rhino and the Valley of a 1000 Hills with its spectacular views which forms part of the midlands meander route with excellent restaurants as well as arts and crafts dotted along the way.
