About Augrabies Falls National Park SANParks

The Khoi people called it "Aukoerebis", or place of Great Noise, as this powerful flow of water is unleashed from rocky surroundings characterised by the 18km abyss of the Orange River Gorge.

Quiver trees stand in stark silhouette against the African sky, silent sentinels in a strangely unique environment where only those that are able to adapt ultimately survive. The 55,383 hectares on both the northern and southern sides of the Orange River provide sanctuary to a diversity of species, from the very smallest succulents, birds and reptiles to springbok, gemsbok and giraffe.

Activities available include waterfall viewpoints, game viewing using own vehicle, night drives (bookable at the park), etc.

Other useful information at this rest camp:

- Pets are not allowed in a National Park

- Malaria prophylactics and mosquito repellents are a good precaution. Malaria has been historically recorded in the area but is not very prevalent. Please consult your chemist/doctor to alleviate any concerns.

- Bicycles, roller blades and skateboards are not allowed.

- You may enter the Park with motorcycles and are allowed to stay in the camping site.

- Remember to bring a hat, walking shoes, sun block, camera, binoculars and wildlife reference books.

- As outdoor lighting in camps is limited, a torch/headlamp is required when walking outside at night.

- Hikers on day and overnight trails must always carry sufficient water.

- Take cool or light clothing for summer and warm for winter – area prone to sudden weather changes.

PLEASE NOTE: the rates are subject to the number of adults and children staying. Quotes will include the 1% Community Levy, but will exclude daily conservation fees, which are to be paid directly to camp on arrival.

The friendliness, helpfulness and atmosphere was great. The restaurant food was excellent and the accommodation was also good. Of course we were lucky to have amazing weather where could sit outside in evening and enjoy a braai and glass of wine. Enjoyed some good hikes although quite nervous on certain sections of dassieshoek trail. Definitely not for the fainthearted.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the self catering unit we got. The aircon was most welcome in the heat even tho a bit noisy. The unit more than adequate for our needs.

The walkways and views are the best. The chalets are okay but in desperate need for a kitchen makeover. A complimentary coffee station in each chalet would make a huge difference. And the very very tiny bar of soap in the bathroom is a joke. The fridge, which looks as if new, is noisy. As I'm a very light sleeper, it kept me awake most of the night. But overall the place is okay, just way overpriced for what you get.

Staff member at the gate was extremely friendly, wish the staff at reception would learn from him, although not unfriendly the lady that helped us did not really try to make us feel at home it was a bit of an uncomfortable experience feeling that we were an inconvenience to her. The rest of the park and scenery was enjoyable.

The chalets were great value and very comfortable. The falls are amazing to see as the sun is coming up. The restaurant was good and not too expensive.
